  • Is there an age requirement to apply as a mentee?

    The Music Writers Lab invites emerging music journalists aged 18+ to participate as a mentee.

  • What do I need to bring?

    Participants will be required to have access to a working computer and internet during the course of The Music Writers Lab.

  • How much experience do I need to apply?

    An ‘emerging writer’ in this series is considered as having less than three years of professional experience. They cannot already be contracted as an established employee of any Australian print or digital media outlet.

  • Who owns my content after The Music Writers Lab finishes?

    You will retain your own copyright after publication. The Music Writer’s Lab will not claim ownership over any participant’s work, though we have the right to market and release the work via a publishing partner.

  • Do I have to pay to participate in The Music Writer's Lab?

    The Music Writer’s Lab pays all participants an honorarium to assist in travel, accomodation and on ground costs. In agreeing to participate in The Music Writer’s Lab, you agree to be present for the entire duration of the event, as well as BIGSOUND (September 6-9).

  • Where do I find more information about BIGSOUND?

    The BIGSOUND music conference and festival runs in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, this September 6-9. For more information, visit their official website, here.

  • What will I be doing during The Music Writers Lab?

    Participants will engage in a series of 1:1 mentorship sessions with our mentors. Through these sessions, they will work on unique pieces of content (eg. review, artist interview, op-ed) during BIGSOUND that will be published by an Australian music outlet in partnership with The Music Writer’s Lab.

  • How long am I expected to be in Brisbane for?

    Participants will be required to be in Brisbane for the duration of BIGSOUND (September 5-9).

    The Music Writer’s Lab begins with a group briefing on September 6th. As such, participants will be required to be in Brisbane from 3pm on September 5.

    Participants also agree to attend the BIGSOUND panel on critical discourse in the music industry on Thursday 8 September, as well as an end of Lab mixer event with other writers (date TBC).

  • Do I have to pay for my BIGSOUND pass?

    Participants will have BIGSOUND registration covered as part of their commitment to The Music Writer’s Lab.

  • When do applications close

    EOI applications close at 5pm AEST on the Tuesday the 9th August.

  • When will successful applicants be notified

    We will notify successful applicants by the 15th August.
